Planning for Bushfire Protection - Shows Inner Protection Zone and Outer Protection Zone (collectively the Asset Protection Zone)

Building Code & Bushfire Hazard Solutions also has a business arm that has been set up to create, maintain and certify Asset Protection Zones (otherwise known as Fire Breaks or Buffer Zones).

All work is done to the requiremnts of the NSW Rural Fire Service's document Planning for Bushfire Protection - 2006 and the "Standards for Asset Protection Zones" and any particular consent conditions.

What Is An Asset Protection Zone (Fire Break)?

An Asset Protection Zone (APZ) is a fuel reduced area surrounding a building or an item of value whether residential, commercial or industrial. Fuel reduced means just that; a reduction in the available vegetation sufficient to reduce the impact of bushfire. It does not mean the total removal of all vegetation and yes some trees can remain.

Fire Break Construction and Maintenance Team

A correctly designed and maintained APZ will:

  • Provide a "buffer zone' between the bushland hazard and the asset. This reduces the radiant heat and ember attack associated with building losses during bushfire impact.
  • Provide access for fire fighters and occupants and a relatively safe area where property defence can be established or back burning can be commenced.

Where Can I Put An Asset Protection Zone?

An APZ may only be implemented on your land and cannot overflow onto a neighbouring property without their written consent. You cannot undertake any clearing of vegetation on a neighbour's property including National Parks, Crown Land or any land under the management of Council.

How Do We Create an APZ?

  • Depending on site conditions (slope, amount of vegetation) we can create the APZ by hand or with the assistance of our rubber tyred slasher. We do not burn vegetation.
  • The dimension of the APZ will be subject to any D. A. consent conditions and the guide provided by the Rural Fire Service Document "Standards For Asset Protection Zones".
  • We also work with your landscaping contractor as necessary to ensure proper design compliance.

Ecological Sustainable Development

In some instances the creation of APZ’s and principles for bushfire protection conflict with ecological objectives or legislative requirements. We are able to work closely with independent ecologists or council environmental officers towards the best possible outcome for fire and life safety issues. Where necessary we can establish the required APZ’s by hand causing minimal impact to the environment as well as liaising with ecologist to ensure there is an acceptable solution between fire safety and environmentally sensitive areas.

Quotations

We provide formal quotations for the creation or maintenance of APZ's. Indeed we can provide for regular maintenance where "special developments" occur. Where possible, materials are "chipped" on site for later use by occupants. Otherwise tipping fees are applicable. We can also arrange for a Bushfire Hazard Reduction Certificate from the Rural Fire Service. Safe Work Method Statements and other insurance documents will also be provided.
